Gnaraloo - 3 Mile Camp

3 Mile Camp was our base.

With an ocean front plot, we were able to enjoy great views at any time of day or night - unpolluted moonlight provided ample lighting once the sun went down each day!

Activities here are largely dictated by the weather and wave conditions. When conditions are right, the enthusiasts take to the water - windsurfers, kiters, surfers. “Tombstones” is the place where the action takes place - wave after wave breaks on the reef there, creating a continuous spectacle for onlookers on the shore.

Hardcore is the only word for it - this is serious stuff. The reefs appear to be composed of jagged rock plateaux. Those near the shore drain almost completely when the waves recede, giving what looks like a pretty unforgiving landing zone for surfing equipment, or surfers.

The clear waters are great for spotting fish. Saw a large ray playing in the surf and colourful parrot fish ride in and out in the swell, looking for snacks.

...more from Gnaraloo later.....
