10 October - Gnaraloo
Where to start? Blogging this part of the trip needs some thought. Ten days, which on their own would be easy to summarise. Collectively though, they were dramatic, traumatic, mind stretching, formative …..
1000km north of the most remote city in the world, Gnaraloo (pron. Nar-Loo) is a sheep station on the coast of WA. A mecca for wave boarders, its a retreat for anyone making the arduous trip from Perth (even further afield).
Its isolation comes mainly from the rough, sandy 75km approach road. If ever this is improved, Gnaraloo’s unique appeal will almost certainly be lost.
Conditions are hot, arid, dusty and sometimes very windy. You need to come prepared, bringing water, food, shelter and fuel. As beginners, we hired a Winnebago - makes a lot of sense until you reach the off road section where it nearly rattled itself (and us) to pieces. Nervous moments - off road use is prohibited!
